7 Condom Myths You Need To Be Protected From

Ever heard someone say condoms kill the mood, don’t work, or are just “too uncomfortable”? Yeah, we’ve heard it all too, and it's time we cleared the air.

At EXS, we’ve been in the game for 32 years. We've seen the myths, we’ve heard the excuses, and we’ve triple-tested our condoms (literally, we do water, airburst and electronic testing) to give you peace of mind in the moment. Let’s look at some of the most common condom myths, and why they’re complete rubbish.

Myth 1: Condoms are uncomfortable.

We get it, no one wants to feel like they’re wearing a bin bag in bed. But the truth? Condoms have come a long way. Super thin, super smooth options like our EXS Air Thin feel like you’re wearing nothing at all.

Fit is everything, too. If it feels tight or like it’s slipping, it’s probably the wrong size. Find your fit using our 5 Step Guide to Measuring Your Penis for a Condom.

Myth 2: Condoms don’t really work.

To clear this up, when used properly, condoms are up to 98% effective at preventing pregnancy and STIs. The key word? Properly. That means checking the expiry date, storing them right (not stuffed in your wallet for months on end), and using one start to finish. No exceptions.

They’re also still the only method that helps prevent both pregnancy and STIs.

Myth 3: All condoms are the same.

Nope! There’s way more variety than you think. From internal condoms to flavoured ones, ultra-thin to extra-large, warming, cooling and even vegan. Condoms are as diverse as the people who use them.

Myth 4: Condoms are bad for the environment.

Good news, ours aren’t! Not to boast but, EXS condoms are made from high-quality natural latex, they’re PETA-certified vegan, and we’re committed to sustainability, including planting more trees where our rubber is harvested and using solar-powered energy. No nasty animal testing, and no weird ingredients. Just good vibes and safe sex.

Myth 5: Condoms ruin the mood.

Honestly? The only mood killer is not being prepared. Have them handy, pick a style you like, and maybe even make it part of the foreplay. Confidence is sexy, and showing you care about your partner’s health goes a long way.

Myth 6: You don’t need a condom for oral sex.

Spoiler: STIs can still be transmitted through oral sex. That includes chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes, and more. Condoms or flavoured ones can help reduce the risk, and make it more fun. For vulva or anal oral sex? Oral dams are your go-to.

Myth 7: Condoms are just for regular sex.

Wrong again. Condoms, internal condoms, and oral dams can be used in a whole range of activities; anal, oral, or toy play. If it involves body fluids, there’s a barrier method to help keep things safe.
